Digital Publishing Consultant

If you  are looking for help in creating innovative and exciting digital publishing solutions, I have years of experience to help you get things done. I have been a senior digital publishing professional for over 20 years and have an exceptional record of achievement in developing innovative and successful products in demanding and competitive markets.

In the old days before technology, I spent quite a few years ‘before the mast’ working for leading legal publishers, Butterworths, on a number of their prestigious encyclopeadias, before rising to Online Publisher in 1997. Whilst at Butterworths I created the first generation Butterworths website which was awarded the Legal Office Technology Award for 'Best Legal Website' two years running and also played a significant role in the ground breaking Butterworths Direct project which was the first step in moving the company’s extensive editorial IP online.

In 2002 I was appointed Publishing Director at Semple Piggot Rochez, a leading multimedia training company and creators of the world’s first internet law school, where I was responsible for the implementation of electronic publishing initiatives across the SPR group of companies and was instrumental in the development of The Legal Practitioner, Semple Piggot Rochez’ award winning CD ROM and online multimedia CPD training portfolio.

Since then I have spent time with Reed Business Information, where I was responsible for the development of two major construction industry websites (contractjournal.com and constructionjobsuk.com) and Serco, where I was responsible for the management and development of the LSIS Excellence Gateway, the definitive online portal for everyone working in the post-16 learning and skills sector and the UK Point of Single Contact (PSC) a free business advice and support service provided by the UK Government for overseas businesses wishing to expand their operations into the UK. Most recently I managed the online education portfolio for Hackney Learning Trust (Hackney Education).

In summary, the skills and experience I can bring to any project encompass the following:

Programme and project management (Agile qualified)

Technical project management

Supplier management

Editorial and content management

Taxonomy and metadata management

Video and e-learning production

Graphic design and IA development

SEO and accessibility compliance

Development and deployment of social media applications

Large scale applications development

Business case management

Stakeholder relationship management

“John has always been excellent to work with. He has a talent for seeing usability from the end-user's perspective and a natural tendency to be adventurous in decisions. Have worked with John on multiple projects, I look forward to continuing this business relationship in the future.”
David Swaddle, Managing Director, Healthy Media

“John worked for me on a couple of programmes - Excellence Gateway and businesslink.gov.uk. John was a trusted member of my team, someone whom I could rely upon to sort things out with virtually no supervision. He built strong teams of good people and was respected by clients. He is creative and knowledgeable in developing online and digital services.
David Dinsdale, Programme Director - Business.Gov, Serco

“I've worked with John on a number of projects with LexisNexis Butterworths and other companies over the past 15 years and have always found him to be a good person to do business with. He is straightforward, honest, perceptive, enthusiastic and does not waste your time with corporate bulls**t. I wish I worked with more people like him.”
Charles Christian, Managing Director, Legal Technology Insider Ltd
